| Lawyer and university president, born in Los Angeles, California, USA. He practised with Jennings, Strouss & Salmon (1964–72) and was founding dean of Brigham Young University's law school (1972–81). He was the US Solicitor General (1981–5), and solidified his reputation as the premier constitutional lawyer while practising with Sidley & Austin in Washington, DC (1985–9), before becoming president of Brigham Young University (1989). |
