| biography:
| Zimbabwean politician and clergyman, born in Nyamandhlovu, WC Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia). He began as a teacher, and after studying in the USA (1955–8) became a Congregationalist minister, and joined the National Democratic Party. He became president of the Zimbabwe African National Union in 1963. An advocate of violent resistance by Black African nationalists, he joined Mugabe in his struggle against Nkomo. After a period of detention in the 1960s, he was eclipsed by Mugabe, and later moved into a close political alliance with Bishop Muzorewa. In 1997 he was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for plotting to kill President Mugabe and overthrow the government, but released on bail pending an appeal, during which time his membership of parliament was suspended. |
