| biography:
| Clergyman and politician, born in Umtali (now Mutare), E Zimbabwe. Ordained in 1953, he studied in the USA and in 1968 became the first black bishop of the United Methodist Church. In 1971 he became president of the African National Council (ANC), a non-violent organization intended to pave the way for an internal settlement of the political situation in Rhodesia. In 1975 the ANC split into two factions - the gradualists, led by Muzorewa, working for a transition to majority rule, and the more extreme elements, led by Joshua Nkomo. Muzorewa was prime minister of ‘Zimbabwe Rhodesia’ for six months in 1979, but after independence his movement was defeated by the parties of Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo. |
