| Literary critic, born in Vienna, Austria. He went to the USA in 1939 and taught at Yale (1946). His Theory of Literature (with Austin Warren, 1949) became a manual of New Criticism. He also wrote the monumental History of Modern Criticism (8 vols, 1955–92). |
