| French statesman and prime minister (1914–15), born in Sidi-bel-Abbés, N Algeria. He was a lawyer first, gaining a reputation as a spokesman for the poor. He was a Socialist deputy for Paris (1893–1902), minister of labour (1906–13), and minister of education (1913–14). He was appointed prime minister just before the outbreak of World War 1, but resigned after being attacked for a shortage of munitions. He then became minister of justice (1915), and after the War was French representative at the League of Nations (1920). |
