| biography:
| Writer, born in Oberehnheim, Alsace. He studied in Munich, Paris, Berlin, and Strasbourg, where he was a founder-editor of the periodicals Der Sturmer (1902) and Der Merkur (1903). He became a journalist and edited the pacifist Expressionist periodical Die weißen Blätter before emigrating in 1932. A major Expressionist writer, his books are set in Alsace, and concern the conflicts of identity and loyalty which arose out of the political situation there. In his masterful trilogy Das Erbe am Rhein (1925, 1927, 1931) his work evolves towards Realism. He also wrote poetry, and a play Am Glockenturm (1920). |
