As adviser to Catherine de Médicis, he instigated the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre (1572), but later advocated measures which led to the Peace of Beaulieu (1576), signed by the duc d'Alençon, Henri III's brother, affording certain privileges to Protestants. |
