| Historian, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. With E J Potgieter he was co-founder of the literary magazine De Gids, which he also co-edited (1838–43). He was engaged to Geertruida Toussaint, but never married her. Forced to leave the country because of debts, he returned in 1851 and became archivist in the state archives. His extensive knowledge of the literature of the Golden Age was remarkable. |
