| biography:
| Protestant theologian, born in Wright City, Missouri, USA, the brother of Reinhold Niebuhr. He studied at Elmhurst College, IL, and at Washington and Yale universities, becoming professor of theology and Christian ethics at Yale in 1931. Like his brother, he had enormous influence on generations of students. His classic study, The Meaning of Revelation (1941), was followed by several books advocating critical reflection on the relation between faith and moral action and on the quest for a Christian transformation of society (‘theological existentialism’). |
