| Writer, born in Oelnitz, E Germany. Regarded as a significant modern poet, his existential poetry, which was influenced by Albert Camus, and his book Die wunderbaren Jahren (1976) resulted in his expulsion from the Schriftstellerverband in East Germany, and precipitated his move to West Germany in 1977. His children's book Der Löwe Leopold received great acclaim, and he was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1977. |
