| biography:
| Strip cartoonist, the creator of Andy Capp, born in Hartlepool, Cleveland, NE England, UK. He was a butcher's errand boy (1931), and became a regular soldier. After World War 2 he joined the Post Office, and freelanced cartoons to the Daily Mirror, who invited him to contribute a regular strip for their new Northern edition in 1958. Andy Capp, the adventures of a feisty little layabout, fonder of beer than of his wife, became the most popular British strip of all time, and the first British one to be syndicated worldwide. Andy Capp was adapted as a stage musical and television series starring James Bolam in 1987. |
