| US painter, born in Paris, France. His parents were American artists who returned to America in 1900. He studied at Yale, became a cartoonist and illustrator for periodicals, and lived in New York City. Known for his water colours and egg tempera paintings of contemporary urban life, he combined the Baroque with a Realistic style, as seen in ‘The Bowery’ (1930) and ‘Negroes on Rockaway Beach’ (1934). |
