| Aircraft designer, born in Talke, Staffordshire, C England, UK. Trained as an engineer, he joined the Vickers Armstrong Supermarine Co in 1916, where he soon became chief designer. He designed sea-planes that won many of the Schneider trophy races (1922–31) and from them evolved the famous Spitfire, whose triumph in World War 2 he did not live to see. |
