| Track cyclist, born in Bury, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He came to prominence in 1947 when he won the world amateur sprint championship, and followed this with silver medals in sprint and tandem in the 1948 Olympic Games in London. That same year he turned professional, and was world sprint champion (1949–51), and again in 1954, setting records in the process which stood for 20 years. He came out of retirement to take the British sprint championship in 1974, aged 54. He died after suffering a stroke while cycling. |
