| Radio engineer and inventor, born in East Bolton, Quebec, SE Canada. He studied at Bishop's University, Quebec, moving to New York City, where he met Thomas Edison. After a varied career in industry and academic life as teacher, chemist, and electrical engineer, he became interested in adapting wireless telegraphy for voice transmission. He developed the principle of amplitude modulation (AM) and made a broadcast of speech and music on 24 Dec 1906 from Brant Rock, MA, which was received over 500 mi away. His work was of great importance for the growth of commercial broadcasting. |
