| Baseball broadcaster, born in Columbus, Mississippi, USA. He was the broadcaster for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees (1939–66), and was known for his colourful phrases such as ‘sitting in the catbird seat’. He enjoyed a ‘revival’ in the final decade of his life as a weekly sports commentator on the National Public Broadcasting System, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. |
