| Snooker player, born in Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent. SE Wales, UK. The first of the great snooker players of the modern era, he was dominant in the 1970s. Welsh amateur champion six times (1950–5), he turned professional in 1968, after careers as a miner and policeman. He was world professional champion six times (1970, 1973–6, 1978), and until 1982 was top of the snooker ratings. |
