| Actor, born in Buncrana, Co Donegal, N Ireland. A member of Dublin's Abbey Theatre from 1947, he had appeared in some 150 productions there by 1963. He made his London debut in 1962, and subsequent West End appearances included Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1964). On film he won international acclaim and a BAFTA award for his performance as the papal envoy in The Mission (1986), and was acclaimed for his part in My Left Foot (1989). A veteran of over 500 television productions, he won BAFTA awards for A Perfect Spy (1988) and A Very British Coup (1989). |
