| Cricketer and broadcaster, born in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. A proficient batsman and spin-bowler, he played for Yorkshire, then captained Leicestershire to their first county championship. He won 66 Test caps for England (36 as captain), taking 122 wickets and scoring two centuries. From 1979–84 he was captain and manager of Yorkshire, leading them to the Sunday League title at 51, and after retirement became a cricket commentator. He was later appointed Chairman of Selectors, Test and County Cricket Board (1994–6), and manager of the England team (1995–6). |
