| Playwright, producer, and actor, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He was a factory-hand at the age of 13, and had several jobs before joining the National Theatre Company in Melbourne. He gained an international reputation from his first major piece of writing, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, a play of the outback, which he produced in 1956, with himself in the leading role. Kid Stakes (1975) and Other Times (1977) completed the Doll trilogy. His work was influential in introducing greater realism into Australian drama. |
