| biography:
| Palaeontologist and geologist, born in Roslyn, Washington, USA. A University of Chicago PhD, he was a member of the US Geological Survey (1913–49), a Kansas state geologist (1916–54), and taught at the University of Kansas (1916–70). He published widely on petroleum, structural geology, stratigraphy, and invertebrate palaeontology, but is best remembered for organizing and directing Treatise on Invertebrate Palaeontology (27 vols, 1948). |
