| Palaeoanthropologist, born in Brisbane, Queensland, NE Australia. He studied at the universities of Queensland and Sydney, and taught at University College London (1919–22), before becoming professor of anatomy at Johannesburg (1923–58). His discovery in a quarry at Taung, near the Kalahari Desert, of Australopithecus africanus in 1924 substantiated Darwin's view of Africa as the cradle of the human species. |
