| US naval officer, born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Trained at the US Naval Academy, he became a specialist in gunnery. He commanded the USS Mississippi in 1938, and led Task Force 16 at the decisive Battle of Midway (1942). He played an important part in the planning and execution of massive amphibious operations, supported by carrier-borne and shore-based aircraft, notably as commander of the 5th Fleet (1944–5). He was president of the US Naval War College (1946–8), and US ambassador to the Philippines (1952–5). |
