| biography:
| Footballer, born in Madrid, C Spain. He was signed to the Athletico Madrid youth team when only 13, and quickly rose through the ranks. In October 1994 he became the youngest player ever to wear a Real Madrid shirt, in his first season scoring nine times in 28 appearances, and winning a Spanish League Championship medal. He was part of the 1998 national team in the FIFA World Cup finals in France, but they were suprisingly eliminated in the first round. A major player in Real Madrid's new young team, he finished top scorer (11 goals) in the Euro 2000 qualifiers. He is one of the highest-paid players in the world, earning around £300 000 a month. His contract contains a £117 million buy-out clause, presumably intended to keep him at Real Madrid for the rest of his career. |
