| biography:
| Argentinian president (1983–9), born in Chascomús, E Argentina. He studied at military and law schools, joining the Radical Union Party in 1945. He served in local government (1951–62), but was imprisoned by the Perón government for his political activities in 1953. When constitutional government returned, he was elected president. He ensured that several leading military figures were brought to trial for human rights abuses, and in 1986 was co-recipient of the Council of Europe's human rights prize. |
