| Fijian leader. He studied in New Zealand and at Oxford, then served in the French Foreign Legion (1914–15) before rejoining the colonial service in Fiji, where he had a career unmatched by any other Fijian. Knighted in 1946, he was appointed District Commissioner (1932), adviser on Fijian Affairs (1943), and Speaker of the Legislative Council (1956). He groomed his nephew, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, to become the first prime minister of Fiji, which attained independence in 1970. |
