| English chronicler, born apparently of a Cheshire family. He went to London early in Elizabeth I's reign, and became a translator. He compiled The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1577). Expanded and reissued under the editorship of John Hooker, alias Vowell, in 1586, it was a major source for many of Shakespeare's plays. |
