| Sikh ruler, born in Budrukhan, NE Pakistan (formerly India). Succeeding his father as ruler of Lahore, he fought to unite all the Sikh provinces, and, with the help of a modernized army trained by Western soldiers, became the most powerful ruler in India. In 1813 he procured the Koh-i-noor diamond from an Afghan prince, as the price of assistance in war. |
