| Italian politician, born in Giuncarico, W Italy. An opponent of Fascism, he went into exile in 1925 and fought in the Spanish Civil War at the head of the Italian Garibaldi brigade. Leader of the PRI (Italian Republican Party) and defence minister (1948–53), he was strongly opposed to Communism and to the centro-sinistra (centre-left) alliance. After he was expelled from the PRI (1964) he founded the Nuova Repubblica movement in favour of a presidential republic. |
