| biography:
| Attorney general and political activist, born in Dallas, Texas, USA. He was named attorney general (1967–9) during the anti-Vietnam War years. Although he prosecuted activists such as the Berrigan brothers, he was known to be a reasonable liberal who moved to the left in his beliefs and causes after returning to private practice. Twice an unsuccessful candidate for the US Senate from New York in the 1970s, he later returned to public prominence as an outspoken critic of two Republican administrations. He himself was roundly criticized for his support of extremist politicians such as Saddam Hussein. In 1992 he published A Report on US War Crimes Against Iraq. |
