| Historian, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Harvard (1950 BA; 1953 MA; 1957 PhD), and then taught at Yale (1967). His many publications, including Soldier and Civilian in the Later Roman Empire (1963), Roman Social Relations (1974), Paganism in the Roman Empire (1981), Christianizing the Roman Empire (1984), Corruption and the Decline of Rome (1990), and Paganism and Christianity (1992), concentrated on social history and the period of late antiquity. |
