| biography:
| Theologian and mystic, born in Palma, Majorca. He served as a soldier and led a dissolute life, but from 1266 gave himself up to asceticism, became a Franciscan, and went on a spiritual crusade to convert the Mussulmans. His major work is the Ars magna (The Great Art), condemned in 1376 for its attempt to link faith and reason, but later viewed more sympathetically. He travelled widely, and was allegedly killed on missionary work in Budia (Bougie), Algeria. His followers, known as Lullists, combined religious mysticism with alchemy. |
