| biography:
| Novelist, short-story writer, and poet, born in Madrid, Spain. He began as a disciple of Darío, but eventually repudiated all his work written prior to 1930. Antes de mediodía (1930) was one of the best Spanish novels of the time, and equally impressive were Agonía y tres novelas más (1931) and Evocación de Laura Estébanez (1933) based on the death of the well-known actress Rosario Pino. Then followed the short stories Saturno y sus hijos (1934) and Almudena (1944), a definitive version of Viejos personajes (1936) which improved on Unamuno's treatment of the Cain–Abel story. His most impressive work (if occasionally prolix) was La casa de la Fama (1951), a chronicle of the decadence of a middle class family in Almería that had been impoverished by the collapse of Spain's empire. Gibraltar, la roca de Calpe (1957) and Páginas de Andalucía (1964) were his last works. |
