| Sikh philosopher and reformer, born in Bhaini, E Pakistan (formerly India). As a boy, he was a member of the Namdhari movement, of which he later became leader. Having entered the army of Ranjit Singh, he formed a sect to rejuvenate Sikhism. He built up a khalsa, or private army, and prophesised that British rule would be broken. Following attacks on Muslims in 1872, he was exiled to Rangoon as a state prisoner. |
