| Scientist and theologian, born in Somerville, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard (1928–32) but left without completing his degree, and later spent time in theological study at Andover Newton seminary (1935–6). He became assistant director of Harvard's Blue Hill meteorological observatory (1936–46), and served as the first executive officer of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1947–64), where he was founder/editor of Zygon, a journal of religion and science (1966). In 1980 he was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion for the journal's ‘unparalleled role in the interdisciplinary pursuit by offering a common ground for dialogue’. |
