| Writer and traveller, born in England, UK, of Scottish descent. He worked as a journalist (1934–40) and served in the Royal Artillery (1940–6) before becoming a full-time writer. While researching his adventure stories, he has travelled to many parts of the globe and lived among the local people to ensure authenticity in his works. His books, translated into many languages, include The Trojan Horse (1940), The Lonely Skier (1947), Campbell's Kingdom (1952, filmed), Atlantic Fury (1962), and Levkas Man (1971, filmed 1981). Later works include Target Antarctica (1993) and Delta Connection (1996). A keen sailor, he was vice-president of the Association of Sea Training Organizations. |
