| Athlete, born in Laurel, Mississippi, USA. A leading long-jumper of the 1960s, he established an unusual treble by winning the gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics, a silver at Tokyo in 1964, and a bronze at Mexico City in 1968. He was the first man to jump over 27 ft/8·2 m. |
