| Writer, born in Döbeln, Saxony, E Germany. He has written poetry with elements of folk art in modern rhyming schemes, as well as more intellectual work, such as the play Heinrich Schlaghands Höllenfahrt (1973) which led to his expulsion from the SED (East German Communist Party). He has also written radio plays and books for children, and is a notable translator of Moliére, Achmatova, and Shelley. He was married to the novelist Sarah Kirsch (1958–68). |
