| German politician, born in Braniewo, Poland (formerly, Braunsberg, East Prussia, Germany). A member of the Bundestag for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 1957, he served as minister for all-German issues (1962–3). He was chairman of the CDU/CSU Bundestag group (1964–73) and federal chairman of the CDU (1971–3). In 1972, as the CDU/CSU candidate for chancellor, he narrowly failed to win a vote of no confidence against Willy Brandt. He later served as minister for inner-German issues (1982–3) and chairman of the Bundestag (1983–4). |
