| Clergyman of Frankish descent, the founder of St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. On a pilgrimage to Rome he suffered an attack of malarial fever. During his convalescence he made a vow to build a hospital, and on his return to London he was granted the site at Smithfield by Henry I. In 1123 the building of St Bartholomew's Hospital and Church was begun. In charge of the hospital until 1137, he retired in that year to the priory. |
