| biography:
| Conductor and composer, born in Býchory, C Czech Republic. He studied at Prague Conservatory, and conducted the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (1936–9, 1942–8). He left Czechoslovakia and settled first in England (1948), then in Switzerland, where he became a citizen in 1973. He was conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1950–3) and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (1961–79), conducted at Covent Garden (1955–8), and was musical director of the New York Metropolitan Opera (1973–4). He has composed five operas, symphonies, concertos, and other works. |
