| biography:
| King of the Frisians, thought to have reigned over a large area across the whole of Friesland, extending to the Lower Rhine southwards and as far as the Weser eastwards. Defeated twice by the Franks, each time he had to allow Christian missionaries in. Legend has it that Willibrord tried to convert him. In 689 he was defeated by Pepin II at Dorestad, and as part of the peace settlement he lost the S part of his country and married his daughter Theodeswinde to Pepin's son Grimoald. After Pepin's death he recovered territory down to Cologne, but was defeated again by Charles Martel in 714. |
