| Chemical engineer and educator, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. He became affiliated with Purdue University's School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (1930–61), becoming its head (1947–51). During World War 2 he was involved in the Manhattan Project to produce the atomic bomb. Specializing in the manufacture of dyes, he served as technical director of or consultant to numerous chemical companies. |
