| Italian politician, born in Sella di Mosso Santa Maria, Piedmont, N Italy. He was one of the most important members of the ‘historic right’ and served as finance minister (1862, 1865, 1869–73). He adopted a very strict fiscal policy - his was the unpopular grist-tax - and succeeded in balancing the budget. He was also a scientist of renown, expert in mathematics and geology. He founded the Club Alpino Italiano (Italian Alpine Club) in 1863. |
