| biography:
| Philanthropist, born in London, UK. Educated at Eton, he went to work in a tea merchant's in a poor area of London. Moved by the plight of the poor children he observed, he determined to improve their lot. With the support of his wife he opened a ‘ragged school’ for destitute children at Charing Cross, then a Youths' Christian Institute, and in 1882 opened Regent Street Polytechnic to teach various trades. His work did not have any public funding until 1889, when London County Council gave support, leading to the spread of polytechnics. |
