| biography:
| Children's writer and illustrator, born in London, UK. He read English at Cambridge, and became a freelance illustrator, producing cartoons for Punch and other periodicals. Acclaimed for his illustrations in the books of Russell Hoban, Roald Dahl, and other children's authors, he also produced books of his own, such as Mister Magnolia (Kate Greenaway Medal), and The Quentin Blake Book of Nonsense Verse and ... Nonsense Stories (both 1996). He was head of the Department of Illustration at the Royal College of Art (1978–86), and became a visiting professor there in 1989. He became the first ever Children's Laureate in 1999. |
