| Conspirator, born in Dethick, Derbyshire, C England, UK. In 1586 he was induced by Ballard and other Catholic emissaries to put himself at the head of a conspiracy aiming to murder Queen Elizabeth I and release Mary, Queen of Scots (the Babington Plot). Cipher messages were apparently intercepted by Walsingham in which Mary was implicated by her approval of the plot, and these were later used against her. Babington fled, was captured at Harrow, and executed with the others. |
