| (3rd-c BC) The earliest named Chinese poet, of royal ancestry. His work is characterized by rich lyricism and philosophical depth. His major work, the 374-line Li Sao (‘Encountering Sadness’) may be an allegory on his own life: a minister to royalty, he had been banished. His suicide by drowning is commemorated in the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. |
