| Sultan of Oman (1970– ), born in Muscat, Oman, the son of Said bin Taimar, and the 14th descendant of the ruling dynasty of the Albusaid family. He studied in England and trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, from where his father recalled him and kept him prisoner for six years. In 1970 he overthrew his father in a bloodless coup and assumed the sultanship. He then headed the rapid and stable modernization of his country. |
