| biography:
| Roman emperor, from 253 colleague and from 260 successor to his father, Valerian. His authority was limited to Italy, for in the provinces the legions frequently revolted, and proclaimed their commanders Caesars. In 268, while besieging one of his rivals in Milan, he was murdered by some of his officers. A hostile tradition perhaps misrepresents his achievements. |
